Before we talk about the recession, we need to recall some terms that will be used later and need to be explained now. First is mortgage, which is the transfer of ownership of a property from a person to a bank or financial institution for a loan with interest which will transfer back to the debtor once the loan has been paid off. The second one is the term foreclosure. It is the occurrence in which the person is unable to pay off the withstanding loan and thus their realty transferred to the institution that loaned the amount. The latest recession was said to be caused by the allure of easy credit and the belief that a house was the true “American Dream” (and we Filipinos so love obtaining the American dream). Because of this, a housing bubble was in the making.

As easy credit piled up making buying houses with money you do not have, most house owner’s were forced to mortgage their homes in order to get money to pay of their withstanding loans. However, most debtors realized that foreclosing their assets were cheaper than paying their mortgage. As time passed, many and many more individuals did this resulting in a housing bubble that was about to burst. This, coupled with many banks’ unscrupulous actions from rising loan limits, fueled the collapse. As the bubble popped, the price of many commodities began to soar with the price of oil tripling. As a result, businesses, such as Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers went bankrupt with the automobile industry taking the worst hit as stock prices plummeted. As businessmen panicked, so did the general public in America. Many feared going out and spending and instead scrimped and scrounged. Business owners themselves tried to cut costs by firing employees, causing unemployment to rise, providing another blow to the American people.

As USA fell into disarray, so did many other countries. The Philippines included. Though not as painfully felt as some countries, the Philippines’ banking companies felt a brunt of the force of the recession. However, despite the recession many companies performed admirably under the situations to flourish. It has long been stated that the media industry was resistant to recessions. Is this true? Even then, most companies have to stay on their toes to survive this recession. Do ABS-CBN and GMA survive simply or do they have methods to combat the global recession?
